Ontario Takes Next Step in Transformation of Stevenson Memorial Hospital

Redevelopment at SMH will connect more people to care in the Simcoe County Region

January 23, 2025 – For Immediate Release

Alliston, ON – Today, Brian Saunderson, MPP for Simcoe-Grey was proud to announce that the Ontario government is connecting more people in New Tecumseth and across Simcoe County to hospital care close to home by investing nearly $14.5 million to support the redevelopment and expansion of Stevenson Memorial Hospital. This new funding builds on the $7.5 million the government has previously invested to support early planning for the redevelopment.

“For generations, Stevenson Memorial Hospital has provided health care support for families in Alliston,” said Brian Saunderson, MPP for Simcoe-Grey. “New Tecumseth is rapidly growing, and so is SMH. This capital grant is another important step towards the end goal of enhancing health care in the region.”

Through this new investment, several site works will be completed to support the next stage of Stevenson’s redevelopment project, including a new parking lot, and relocation of existing mechanical infrastructure. The expansion of the hospital will create a larger state-of-the-art space to expand services and ensure the hospital can continue to meet the needs of Alliston’s rapidly growing community. Site work is set to begin in January 2025 and is scheduled to be completed by October 2025.

“Our government is making historic investments in Ontario’s hospitals to ensure people of all ages can access the care they need, where and when they need it,” said Sylvia Jones, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health. “This investment to support Early Works construction at Stevenson Memorial Hospital is another step forward in Stevenson’s redevelopment and will ensure families in New Tecumseth can access high-quality care in their community, for generations to come.

Once completed, the expanded hospital will include:

  • Increased capacity to care for additional patients, including nine additional acute care beds, bringing the total number of beds to 47
  • New emergency department that is triple the size, including a separate entrance and enclosed ambulance bays, facilitating faster and easier access to emergency care
  • Updated and larger laboratory to increase capacity for testing and diagnostics, allowing the hospital to meet the needs of the growing community
  • New surgical suites that will more than double the surgical department in size, decreasing wait times for surgeries and procedures
  • Enhanced birthing unit with new labour and delivery rooms, as well as a family waiting area
  • A new elevated helipad to help transport patients requiring urgent, life-saving care faster

As a next step, the ministry is working with Stevenson and Infrastructure Ontario to issue the Request for Proposals to tender this project. Once the project is tendered and awarded, a construction schedule will be confirmed.

Through Your Health: A Plan for Connected and Convenient Care, the Ontario government is expanding and modernizing Ontario’s hospitals, making it faster and easier for people of all ages to connect to the high-quality care they need, where and when they need it.
