Ontario Takes Next Step in Transformation of Stevenson Memorial Hospital

Process underway to select contractor to build the revitalized hospital in New Tecumseth and connect more people to quality care

May 1, 2025 – For Immediate Release

ALLISTON – The Ontario government is marking a key milestone in delivering high-quality hospital care for families in Simcoe County by issuing a Request for Proposals (RFP) to select the team that will build an expanded and revitalized Stevenson Memorial Hospital.

“Stevenson Memorial Hospital is a pillar of the community having served generations of families in and around New Tecumseth,” said Brian Saunderson, MPP for Simcoe-Grey. “This next step on the road to the construction of a new, expanded hospital is vital and will ensure SMH provides world-class healthcare to residents throughout their lives.”

Following the competitive Request for Qualifications (RFQ) process that began in August 2024, three companies were shortlisted based on criteria identified, including construction expertise and financial capacity to undertake a project of this size and scope. The following prequalified teams are:

  • EllisDon Corporation
  • Ledcor Construction Limited
  • Pomerleau Inc.

This project includes a new, two-storey building that will more than double the size of the hospital and increase inpatient bed capacity by 20 per cent, allowing people and families to access the care they need, where and when they need it.

When completed, this transformative project will also include:

  • a new and expanded emergency department that is triple in size, including a separate entrance and enclosed ambulance bays, facilitating faster and easier access to emergency care
  • an updated and larger laboratory to increase capacity for testing and diagnostics, allowing the hospital to meet the needs of their increased number of patients
  • a new, more modern pharmacy that can better meet the needs of patients
  • new surgical suites that will more than double the surgical department in size, decreasing wait times for surgeries and procedures
  • an enhanced birthing unit with new labour and delivery rooms and a family waiting area
  • a new elevated helipad to help transport patients requiring urgent, life-saving care faster

In addition to these revitalized spaces, the project will also include more parking spots and new and refreshed green spaces that will provide welcoming and relaxing spaces for visitors.

“Our government is making record investments to protect Ontario’s health care system and connect people to the care they need, when they need it,” said Sylvia Jones, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health. “Today’s milestone brings us one step closer to getting shovels in the ground for Stevenson Memorial Hospital’s redevelopment and is another way our government is expanding capacity, decreasing wait times, and ensuring that families in New Tecumseth can access the right care, in the right place, for decades to come.”

As a next step, the shortlisted teams will prepare proposals that detail how they will deliver the project. Once submissions are received, Infrastructure Ontario and Stevenson Memorial Hospital will evaluate the proposals, select a preferred company and then negotiate a final contract. The successful company is expected to be announced in early 2026.

Through Your Health: A Plan for Connected and Convenient Care, the Ontario government is expanding and modernizing Ontario’s hospitals, making it faster and easier for people of all ages to connect to the high-quality care they need, where and when they need it.
